PLANS for an American-style wine bar have prompted councillors to make a site visit before approving the scheme.
The owners of an off-licence in Main Street, Ferryhill, have applied for planning permission to convert it into a licensed coffee bar, selling popcorn, sandwiches, coffee and alcoholic drinks.
The application to Sedgefield Borough Council says: "The intention is to create a high class place where you could meet colleagues for a light lunch or after work, without the pressure of having to buy an alcoholic drink."
But Ferryhill Town Council has objected to the scheme because some people will have to cross a road to get to the bar.
They argue that it is in a dangerous location, saying it will encourage people to cross the road from other pubs, and that the paved area in front of the building is insufficient. Lack of car parking provision and the potential to create noise nuisance are also given as grounds for objection.
Letters of objection have also been received from the owners of a nearby flat and business, highlighting possible crime and disorder implications.
Neither the police nor highway officials have offered objections to the proposal and borough council planning officers have recommended approval.
But councillors decided to view the site before making a decision
