A MAJOR engineering firm is set to expand its site.
Tallent Engineering has been granted planning permission to extend a factory building at its site on Newton Aycliffe Industrial Estate, County Durham.
The firm, which employs 900 people in Aycliffe, is to demolish part of an existing single-storey factory to make way for a new purpose-built press hall for the manufacture of car components. The current building is not high enough to accommodate the new machinery.
The extension comes just weeks after the company was granted permission for a new industrial building and refurbishment of the former Darchem building on the site.
The new building is another indication of the recent upturn in fortunes for the Newton Aycliffe factory after months of uncertainty for workers in the face of Rover's crisis and a cloud over Nissan's future health.
A sister company in Bedford closed last month with the loss of 300 jobs as part of an apparent restructuring.Aycliffe is set to take on part of that production
