THE war against drugs has been stepped up after police confirmed their biggest seizure in a Northern city.

A weekend operation in York netted a £100,000 haul of heroin, amphetamines and cocaine and led to six arrests.

Two men and three women have since been released without charge, but a 43-year-old from Leeds has appeared in court to answer allegations of unlawful possession of drugs.

Afterwards, Superintendent John Lacy, who led the operation, said: "This is only the beginning - there are more to follow - but we do need to gather intelligence, and I appeal to anyone who has information regarding the supply of drugs, to ring Crimestoppers on 0850 555111."

Elsewhere in North Yorkshire, clubbers queueing outside the Harrogate night spots have been asked to cooperate with searches by police snifffer dogs before they are allowed in.

No arrests have been made yet but Chief Inspector Les Potter said he does not see that as evidence that dealers are not active in the town.

"I can't say we expected to make any seizures, but it wasn't just about arrests. With the clubs being very good about co-operating, it's as much a deterrent as anything. But if it's making life harder for the dealers then it is working.

"This time, we made our intentions public, but we won't necessarily do that in future."
