A POLICE officer who performed a daring river rescue is to be honoured for his bravery next week.
PC Kevin Hood leapt into action to pull a woman from the River Wear, in Sunderland, after she jumped from the Wearmouth Bridge in September last year.
He will be one of seven officers presented with the Order of St John Life Saving Medal in Bronze.
A number of other officers will be honoured at the ceremony at Northumbria Police headquarters, next Monday.
They include PCs Karena Long and Kay Wilson, who rescued old people from a fire in Gateshead.
The officers discovered an elderly people's home, in Whitley Court, Springwell, on fire in October last year.
They led 12 residents to safety before bringing the blaze under control using fire extinguishers.
They then found another resident in the smoke-logged building and took him to safety
