THE Mayor of Stockton visited a secret garden yesterday to congratulate volunteers.
Councillor Pete Andrew presented a plaque to staff and volunteers at the Ragworth Neighbourhood Centre.
The garden won best voluntary project at the recent Northumbria in Bloom 2000 competition, along with a community garden at Primrose Hill Community Centre.
Centre manager Carol Davies said: "Residents, including young people and staff at the neighbourhood centre, all contributed to the secret garden. We're all delighted with the recognition from Northumbria in Bloom.
"The secret garden is a small courtyard in the middle of the Neighbourhood Centre and for a long time very few people knew that it existed.
"It was local children who first called it the secret garden, and it seems to have stuck.
