POLICE have issued a warning about sneak thieves as the dark winter nights approach.
Northumbria Police detectives are dealing with a number of burglaries committed during the past week.
Thieves have taken electrical goods, jewellery, ornaments and cash from homes simply by opening unlocked doors and windows.
People are advised to beat the burglars by taking extra care over security by locking up their homes, especially at night.
Any early Christmas gift purchases should be kept hidden from sight and items of value should be checked against the requirements of household insurance.
Neighbours can play their part by reporting anything suspicious to police and noting car registration numbers and descriptions of people.
Police recommend never letting strangers into homes unless previously arranged and even then people should have a friend or relation with them.
Detective Inspector Shaun Tumelty said: "Remember thieves feed off carelessness, so take precautions and avoid becoming a victim."
l Police on Wearside are investigating a series of break-ins and attempted burglaries committed by two men wearing baseball caps.
Five homes and hotels in the sea front and Roker Park Terrace area of Roker, Sunderland, were targeted by the thieves on Saturday morning.
The men managed to steal only a limited amount of property.
Anyone with information should call Sunderland City CID on 0191-454 7555.
