THE closure of the Mercury Bridge has emphasised the need for safe off-the-road routes for Richmond horse and pony riders.
Ten took part in last Saturday's national horse and road safety day, launched by Horse magazine and the Peugeot motor company and supported by the British Horse Society.
The aim was to foster better understanding between motorists and riders. Safety leaflets were distributed along the way.
Mrs Michelle Slinger, co-ordinator, said: "We are appealing to the local authority and local landowners to help us establish more bridleways and off-road tracks.
"The closure of the Mercury Bridge at Richmond highlighted the need because of the increase in traffic on the back roads we ride at present. It is a one-way crossing now which has slightly alleviated the problems caused to both motorists and riders."
