THE numbers at Eastbourne Comprehensive School in Darlington are growing thanks to a increased confidence in the school.
Nearly 200 new pupils started at the school in Year Seven at the beginning of September.
This is the second year running that there has been such a big intake, making it one of the fastest growing schools in the region.
The school is now 840 pupils strong, and will grow to just over 900 pupils next year.
This is having a big impact on the school and it has meant the number of teachers has had to be increased dramatically.
Eighteen new teachers started at Eastbourne after the summer, all of whom were specially selected for their experience and skills, and the opportunities they can offer pupils.
The physical education staff has been increased by six full-time members. The PE department is going from strength to strength thanks to improved facilities at the school.
There are currently between 17 and 20 teams for all kinds of sports in the school, from football to hockey and swimming and netball.
Because of the interest from pupils, the school is buying two new 17-seater minibuses.
Headteacher Richard Appleton said: "This is a really exciting time and pupils who are at Eastbourne now and those who will transfer in from primary schools in the coming year will have a fantastic educational opportunity.
"The school is really buzzing with the work that the pupils are doing and visitors to the school have commented on what an excellent atmosphere there is in the school."
Other departments are also expanding. The languages section has recently taken on five more members of staff, as well as an advanced skills teacher.
Both the maths and science departments have taken on two new members of staff each, there is a new head of religious education and geography, and the English department has two new members of staff.
Mr Appleton said: "All the members of staff have made a significant contribution to the school in the first half of term and are bringing special skills to the school.
"Pupils are enjoying having so many fresh faces.
