HUNDREDS of Durham people have backed a call for pensioners to be given a better deal.
Liberal Democrats in the city collected 472 names on a petition, calling on the Government to increase state pensions.
The move follows the outcry when the Government announced a rise of only 75p a week.
The party's Fair Deal for pensioners campaign calls for a £5 increase, with rises of £10 for the over-75s and £15 for the over-80s.
The party's youth affairs spokesman, Lembit Opik, collected the petition from regional media coordinator, Fiona Hall, and Carol Woods, the prospective parliamentary candidate for the city, yesterday, when he spoke to Durham Student Union.
Party leader Charles Kennedy will take it, with others collected up and down the country, to Downing Street on Monday.
