HEALTH secretary and Darlington MP Alan Milburn was in his constituency yesterday to speak to children about firework safety.
He visited the town as Darlington Borough Council continued preparing for its Fireworks 2000 event, in South Park.
The Health Secretary was visiting the Eastbourne Comprehensive School sports complex, where youngsters took part in Camp Dolphin holiday activities, including quizzes on fireworks, building a guy and taking part in a fireworks safety treasure hunt.
Staff from the town's Dolphin Centre have already begun a series of fireworks safety talks at schools to reinforce the message about the dangers of fireworks.
Fireworks 2000, which is presented by Darlington Borough Council and sponsored by 100-102 Century Radio FM, is to be held in Darlington's South Park next Saturday, November 4.
It is expected to attract tens of thousands of people from around the region
