POLICE in the Richmond area are to clamp down on cyclists riding without lights.
With the clocks having gone back at the weekend, police are concerned the potential for accidents has increased.
Officers say that they will be on the lookout for cyclists, particularly youngsters, breaking the law.
Police will be warning cyclists for a first offence, but anyone stopped a second time could face prosecution.
Parents of children stopped by police patrols will be sent a letter, outlining the reasons why.
Richmond's Sergeant Andrew Nursey said: "Use of cycles without lights poses a danger, not only to the rider, but also to motorists and other road users.
"We are asking parents to ensure that, if their child has a bike, to make sure it is fitted with the correct lights.'
