A BUS shelter is to be pulled down just days after being put up, following complaints.

The shelter in Newport Road, Middlesbrough, was erected for the six-month experiment to pedestrianise parts of central Middlesbrough.

Although there had been a bus stop there previously, it had only been marked by a sign.

Middlesbrough Borough Council took the decision to add the shelter, as well as painting the words "bus stop" on the road, during work being carried out as part of the experiment.

Since it was established, a flood of complaints has been received from businesses in Newport Road. They claim that, as the stop can only be used by overnight buses, the shelter's only use is as a magnet for vandals.

As the area is used as a cycle path during daylight hours, cyclists are also unhappy that the shelter protrudes on to it.

A council spokesman said: "As a result of the complaints, we plan to move the bus shelter in the next couple of weeks.
