A YOUNG mother-to-be is to be moved to a mother and baby unit to give birth to her child in custody after being sentenced for burglary yesterday.

Kelly McLeod is in the middle of a 12-month sentence for offences for obtaining by deception, which should see her released from custody in January.

Yesterday, Judge Tony Briggs sentenced her to four months' detention for an offence of burglary, which McLeod, 19, had admitted and will not add to the time she has to spend in custody.

Judge Briggs allowed her boyfriend, Wayne Williams, 21, of Rugby Terrace, Port Clarence, near Stockton, bail, after he admitted the same offence of burglary.

Williams will now be able to be at the birth of the couple's first child in two weeks' time. He is expected to be sentenced in three weeks after a pre-sentence report is prepared.

Shaun Dryden, prosecuting, told Teesside Crown Court the pair had gone into a house in Hartlepool from where a watch had been taken.

They were found sitting on a sofa in the house.

Mr Dryden said McLeod, of Harwood Street, Hartlepool, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court in July to 12 months in custody for offences of obtaining by deception.

Deborah Sherwin, for McLeod, said at the time of her offending she had been addicted to heroin, but she no longer takes drugs.

She was now taking responsibility for herself and her child and she and Williams were planning for a future together.

Ian West, for Williams, said an adjournment before sentence would be advantageous to him because he was keen to be present at the birth of his child
