YOUNGSTERS from a Durham school are getting their walking boots on thanks to the Prince's Trust.
Seven pupils of Gilesgate Sports College and Sixth Form Centre want to train in basic expedition leadership.
After training they will assist qualified leaders in taking pupils from their own school and local primary schools on walks across moors and dales.
The Prince's Trust has been given a £14,973 Millennium Award, which will be used for equipment, specialist instructors, transport, photography and promotional materials.
The awards are funded from a £2.7m grant from the Millennium Commission.
The youngsters applied for the grant after doing a number of walks around former mining villages in the area.
Group chairman Gary Harker said: "It really is exciting. I'm learning skills that will last a lifetime and it's like one huge adventure walking across the heather with a map and compass. It's wonderful."
Durham County Council community education youth worker Ann Ferguson, who is supporting the group, said: "This grant has made it possible for the young people to get out of the villages where they live and into the countryside.
"The commitment and enthusiasm of the group is outstanding."
