PLANS for an American-style licensed bar in Ferryhill have been rejected because of fears about road safety.
Planning officers at Sedgefield Borough Council recommended approval for the wine bar in Main Street.
In a supporting letter, the applicant said: "It would be along the lines of an American-style licensed coffee bar, where you can buy popcorn, sandwiches, tea and coffee, and alcoholic beverages.
"The intention is to create a high-class place where you could meet colleagues for a light lunch, or after work, without the pressure of having to buy an alcoholic drink."
But Ferryhill Town Council objected to the plan because of lack of car parking, the potential for noise nuisance for residents, and the danger of customers crossing the road from other pubs.
There were also objections from the owners of a nearby flat and business, who raised concerns about the potential for extra litter and food smells.
Councillors had deferred a decision on the plan until yesterday, so they could visit the site. After the visit they decided to reject the application.
