AN ambitious project to refurbish one of the region's 'hidden gems' is to be used as a national demonstration project.
The 17th-Century Sir William Turner's Hospital at Kirkleatham, near Redcar, is having a complete makeover costing more than £1m.
The almshouses, which provide sheltered accommodation for elderly people, are to be refurbished to form 25 self-contained flats and other facilities. The scheme, by Tees Valley Housing Group, has been selected by the National Housing Forum as a demonstration project and will be monitored against a series of key national benchmarks.
Although 18 other projects around the country have been chosen for the demonstration scheme, the almshouses is the only Grade I listed building to be selected.
