DARLINGTON Harrier Ruth Brown won the senior women's race in the opening North Yorkshire and South Durham Harrier League meeting at Barnard Castle last Sunday.
The 20-year-old university undergraduate, who is a Great Britain junior international, beat clubmate Bernadette Taylor, a former English Schools 3000m track silver medallist, by half a minute in lashing rain. Loftus' Catherine Hare was third.
The men's race was won by guest runner Martin Scaife, a former Mandale Harrier who now competes for Chester-le-Street AC. He beat Great Britain junior international Stephen Hepples by 20 seconds after a ding-dong battle on a gruelling course made difficult underfoot by torrential rain
