A SCHEME which aims to provide safe accommodation for homeless young people is to be launched in the New Year.
The Nightstop Supported Lodgings Scheme is looking for people in the Redcar and East Cleveland area who can offer a home to young people aged 16 to 18 who need support and security while they find a job or return to education. Volunteers provide lodgings for young people in their home for up to a year.
Project co-ordinator Sarah Turner said: "We are mainly looking at this scheme being used for care leavers who don't have all the skills and independence to find their own accommodation.
"At 16 most people need a family environment rather than suddenly having to take responsibility for themselves," she added.
Checks are made and hosts are given training and paid a small amount.
Since Nightstop arrived in Redcar three years ago, it has helped more than 250 young people and hopes this scheme will allow it to reach out to even more vulnerable young people.
