A PLEA has been made for urgent action to prevent further accidents at a North Yorkshire road blackspot.
The county's chief constable, David Kenworthy, has been asked to have the overtaking lane at Golden Hill, on the A64 near Malton, closed off.
The call from local county councillor Mike Knaggs follows two accidents in three days on the stretch of road.
On Monday, two teenagers were killed in a horrific collision, and on Wednesday two people suffered slight injuries in another collision nearby.
Coun Knaggs has approached Mr Kenworthy through the county's Police Authority to personally take up the issue with the Highways Agency.
"The problem could be resolved in hours. We are only talking about white lines on the road and the manpower to lay them," said Coun Knaggs.
He wants the action to be taken as a matter of urgency before a detailed investigation of the long-term future of the stretch of road and safety improvements.
"We cannot allow this carnage to continue," he said
