IT'S going to be a night fit for heroes! Nominations for the Local Heroes Awards 2000 have been flooding in and a cracking night is in store at Darlington Football Club on Friday November 24.
Forget the £30,000-a-week superstars of professional sport, this is all about putting those who play sport for the sheer love of it in the spotlight for a change.
Century FM has now joined The Northern Echo and Darlington Building Society for the event which will make the stars of grass roots sport heroes for the night.
The search for the Local Heroes of 2000 began six weeks ago when we asked for nominations, with the closing date being November 9. The names of dozens of fantastic contenders have already been sent in.
All nominees will be contacted prior to the event and will receive two free tickets. Team nominees will receive four free tickets, with any further tickets available at a discounted rate of £5.
Trophies have been specially commissioned and the overall Local Hero will win £500 of sports equipment.
As well as the presentation of these special awards, entertainment will be provided by 'The Sporting Question', compered by Century FM's breakfast star Paul "Goffy" Gough.
We'll be putting together two teams to compete in our own version of A Question of Sport - The Professionals versus Our Readers.
The Professionals will comprise Northern Echo sports editor Nick Loughlin, a star of local professional sport, and another Century FM celebrity.
They will be challenged by a team of readers over six rounds of sporting trivia, mystery guests, and embarrassing moments.
Are you good enough to take on The Professionals? Send in a recent photograph and tell us a little bit about yourself in writing, including details of your sporting interests and why you should be chosen for the readers' team.
The names of the celebrity guests will be announced in Local Heroes soon so don't miss the region's best guide to grass roots sport - dedicated to those who play sport for the love of it.
l Write to Jane O'Byrne, Promotions Manager, Priestgate, Darlington, with nomination details or if you wish to take part in A Sporting Question.
