COUNCIL chiefs have been accused of insulting the memory of a dead war hero.
Private Joseph Murray was killed after volunteering for a dangerous mission in France during the First World War.
His family wants his name on the war memorial at St Silas's church at Byker, Newcastle, but the city council has caused outrage by saying the time and expense cannot be justified.
Liberal Democrat councillor Nick Cott said: "I'm astounded. This is quite insulting to the memory of a war hero, especially on the eve of Remembrance Day."
A council spokesman said: "Obtaining and validating documentation and carrying out all the work involved in adding to memorials is extremely time-consuming."
