LEISURE bosses who have fielded hundreds of calls from people worried that a major fireworks display will be cancelled have vowed: "The show will go on".
More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the Century FM Fireworks 2000 event in South Park, Darlington, tonight - so long as the weather does not put them off.
But leisure manager Terry Collins said yesterday: "The forecast today and tomorrow is good and it will be going ahead."
Other Guy Fawkes events still going ahead tonight include: Sedgefield village, at Ceddesfeld Hall; Gainford village green, near Darlington; Newton Aycliffe Scout Centre; Hartlepool; Redcar Racecourse; and Northallerton fire station's event at the Applegarth car park.
Events going ahead tomorrow include: Startforth Hall, Barnard Castle; Catterick Garrison; Crook; Spennymoor; and Heighington. The Northern Echo understands that all events in the North Durham and Tyneside areas are expected to go ahead.
Events cancelled include: Skinningrove Beck tonight; Great Aycliffe Town Council's display tomorrow; Stockton Riverside tomorrow; and Northallerton Road, Danby Wiske, North Yorkshire, tomorrow.
l Although all these details were correct last night, The Northern Echo was unable to contact all event organisers. Some of these displays may still be subject to cancellation if the weather continues to blight the region. Please check with organisers
