Darlington are giving a trial to Chesterfield defender Steve Woods.
The former Stoke City player has lost his place at Saltergate, partly because of the arrival of former Darlington defender Steve Tutill from Feethams during the summer, and is available on a free.
Darlington manager Gary Bennett said: "He trained with us yesterday, and we're going to have a look at him in the reserves on Wednesday.
"He's a left-sided player, who can play at left back or as a left-sided central defender."
If the the reserve game at Sheffield United goes ahead it could also see Paul Heckingbottom and Gary Himsworth begin their comebacks from injury.
Bennett is also thought to be looking at a player from Gateshead, after watching the UniBond League side twice over the last three weeks.
He admits that Quakers need to win against Halifax on Saturday to boost morale, which suffered a blow in the 2-0 defeat at Hull City.
"We need a win and I don't care how get it," he said. "We know what we've got to do, and that's score goals. We had chances to score before Hull scored their first on Saturday, but it's the same old record. I'm sure we'll get there, sooner or later."
Quakers FA Youth Cup tie, which was scheduled for tonight at York, has been postponed.
Quakers have been drawn at home to Albany Northern League side Hebburn in the second round of the Durham Challenge Cup on Wednesday November 15, kick off 7.30pm.
