A PROGRAMME aimed at providing free sports tuition for unemployed people is being launched on Teesside.
Middlesbrough Football Community Centre is starting a "Sports Ed Programme" to improve the self-esteem as well as the health and fitness of unemployed people living in South Bank and the surrounding area.
As well as running sports sessions, the centre plans to hold educational courses.
Sarah Gartland, a duty officer at the Middlesbrough Football Community Centre, said she is confident of the benefits.
"I really hope it will be a great success - it is a great opportunity for local people to get something out of the centre," she said.
The running of the scheme will be overseen by the Middlesbrough Football Community Project in conjunction with Tees Valley Leisure.
It has received financial support from the Tees Valley Training and Enterprise C ouncil as well as the University of Teesside, Stockton and Billingham College, and a host of other organisations.
Ms Gartland said: "The facilities here are excellent - we have a high-tech computer suite and state-of-the-art sports facilities."
