POLICE are hunting thieves who raided the home of a dales farmer while he and his wife were attending a sheep society dinner in Scotland.
The thieves were disturbed when the alarm went off at the couple's home at Eastgate, Weardale, County Durham.
But they managed to escape with valuable jewellery. Among the haul were two antique gold necklaces and several rings and brooches. The thieves also made off with a new Dyson vacuum cleaner.
The couple had left their home on Friday to attend the annual dinner of the Blue-Faced Leicester Society dinner at Gretna Green.
Police believe the thieves struck in the early hours of darkness on Friday night - about 7pm - and they are appealing for anyone who saw vehicles or strangers hanging around in the Eastgate area at that time to come forward
