A TOWN has hired the services of Father Christmas to promote a programme of Yuletide cheer.

The jovial old gent, alias Magic 1170 radio presenter Bruce Edwards, handed out timetables, listing Middlesbrough's Ice Magic Festival events.

The brochures give details of a range of entertainment being staged in the town, including the creation of an outdoor ice rink, as well as store opening times, car parking and bus timetables.

The aim is to bring more shoppers into the Teesside town in the run-up to Christmas.

Town centre manager Barbara Wren said: "Middlesbrough has a lot to shout about this year. Not only do we have a fantastic range of shops, we've also got an unrivalled programme of events taking place.''

Promotions such as the ice rink are being presented by Middlesbrough Borough Council and Middlesbrough Town Centre Company, in partnership with TFM and 1170.
