AN artwork featuring the hand prints of people who witnessed the greatest events of the 20th Century has gone on display at Durham Cathedral.

The work was produced by local painter Bob Barron, who spent a year collecting the prints from people born in each year of the century.

The first print belongs to a woman born on January 1, 19O0, and the last is that of a baby born last New Year's Eve.

Others include a First World War veteran, who took part in the Battle of Cambrai, the first major battle when tanks were used.

A Polish Jew who survived the Nazi death camps during the Second World War, and a German soldier who fought on the Eastern Front in Russia, are also featured.

Everyone who gave their hand print took part or witnessed - directly or indirectly - the momentous events that shaped the last century.

Each print was individually framed and all 100 of the 18in square frames are displayed with a text montage describing the events.

The exhibition, called Witnesses, has been displayed in The Mall Gallery in London.

It is now on show in the cathedral's Galilee Chapel until November 26, supporting the Anne Frank exhibition. Admission is free.
