A MAYOR is leading by example to promote recycling.

Middlesbrough Mayor, Councillor Kath Bevington, filled a heavy duty sack with old newspapers and magazines to launch new, experimental, fortnightly waste-for-recycling collections.

Working with Middlesbrough council, Roseberry Recycling is to collect waste paper from 25,000 homes in the town in the scheme, which, it is hoped, will eventually be extended throughout the town.

It is estimated the trial alone will yield 4,000 tonnes of paper a year, to be sent to a plant run by Cheshire Recycling, at Warrington. A donation of £1 per tonne of paper will go to Save the Children
