A NEW rapid response service will provide short-term care to pensioners in their homes during times of crisis.
The Dales Primary Care Group has commissioned and funded the service for elderly people in Wear Valley and Teesdale.
It aims to respond quickly in emergency situations, and arrange support for people at home to prevent them having to go into hospital unnecessarily.
People over the age of 65 are eligible for the support, which is available for up to 14 days.
District nurse, John Moran, the newly-appointed coordinator of the scheme, said: "Illnesses such as severe chest infections or flu, falls or other minor injuries often mean that older people who normally lead independent lives are suddenly unable to cope on their own.
"In most cases this is only for a short period of time, and the person does not need or want to go into hospital.
"This new service means we can provide them with the additional support they need to be able to stay at home."
