ONE of the region's most celebrated museums took a crucial step in its rich history as the new board of trustees met for the first time.

The 12 members of the board of trustees of the Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle, County Durham, met for the first time at the 19th Century chateau-style building, to discuss its future.

The board, which is chaired by Lord John Eccles, is made up of eight men and four women, including an artist, architect, lawyer and business advisor.

During their first meeting, the trustees discussed issues which could enhance the appeal of the museum, such as vital repair work, new exhibitions and the development of educational programmes.

Marketing officer for the museum, Dr Anne Allen, said one of the key aims of the trustees was to attract more visitors.

She said: "The meeting was a chance for the trustees to introduce themselves to each other, and talk about some of the priorities of their role as trustees.

"They are obviously keen to attract more visitors, and this will hopefully be possible through a series of initiatives."

The museum, which houses an acclaimed collection of fine art and antiquities, became an independent trust in August in a bid to improve the profile of the historic attraction.

On November 10, the museum will appoint its new director, who will act as a chief executive for the museum, and will be answerable to the trustees
