A MAN at the forefront of a plan to make a North-East town the most disabled-friendly place in Europe has been rewarded for his efforts.
Trevor Sterling, of Stockton, has been chosen as a Community Champion by the Scarman Trust for his work as secretary of the Gateway to Independence project.
The Gateway plans to build a state-of-the-art resource centre to help Teesside people with disabilities live independently in the community.
The Community Champions fund was set up to help individuals and groups who have helped set up new community activities.
David Fallon, regional spokesman for the Scarman Trust, said: "We listen to and provide professional support to hundreds of remarkable people who are determined to change their communities for the better,
"Trevor Stirling and the Gateway to Independence plans deserve support which is why they have been chosen for this award."
As part of his award, Mr Stirling will receive £2,000 to help continue the group's work.
