RESIDENTS in the flood-hit east Cleveland village of Skinningrove have been urged to help stamp out an outbreak of vandalism that is threatening flood defences.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has delivered a letter to all the occupied homes in the community, revealing that sandbags have been slashed, while youngsters have been using the barrier as a climbing frame.
Councillor Dave McLuckie, lead member for community safety, said: "The vandalism could have disastrous results, heightening the risk of more flooding."
The rest centre at Rosecroft School has been closed and the clean-up has started in the village. The council plans to rehouse 13 families into available houses on the Westfield estate, at Loftus.
All the borough's schools will be open as normal today
