CHILDREN at a County Durham village primary school have responded to the plight of their peers in eastern Europe.
Having been told of the suffering of children in Balkan nations and neighbouring countries, because of the upheaval which has blighted the region, pupils at Bournmoor Primary School decided to bring some Christmas cheer into their lives.
They were asked to fill decorated shoe boxes with gifts for counterparts in Romania, Belarus and Croatia.
More than 30 pupils donated items, including warm clothing.
They will be collected today, by a representative of the charity Operation Christmas Child, and flown to eastern European in time for Christmas.
Headteacher Sheila Williams said the children had responded to lessons underlining the hardship suffered in conflicts, arising from the break-up of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.
