A WOMAN who was bombarded with obscene mail after her personal details were posted on a pornographic Internet site is stepping up her fight for stricter Web laws.
Joan Young received countless telephone calls from men hoping to arrange sexual liaisons, as well as a variety of pornographic magazines, catalogues and computer discs.
Letters from men who had found her address, telephone number and false details about her sexual activities, which had been maliciously posted on the website, also arrived over the course of a week at the end of August. Now, she has had her telephone numbers changed and, although the mail is drying up, police investigations are ongoing and she is hoping to lobby for laws to be brought in to control porn on the Web.
Joan, 50, from Darlington, will meet with Darlington borough councillors next week to discuss options for pressing for such action.
After The Northern Echo highlighted Joan's situation, she has received a lot of support from people she barely knew but had come forward to wish her well.
"There is a lot of people who agree with me that something needs to be done," she said.
"Laws have to be changed to deal with the Internet, but it's finding how to go about it. That's the problem I'm having."
Internet experts at Durham Constabulary headquarters are investigating the problems
