O a day when the weather took it's toll on a number of the scheduled matches, Washington Westwood hit top spot for the first time this season when they defeated a depleted Herrington CW 3-0 at the Welfare ground. Herrington manager Kevin Pounder was forced to play because of injuries and work commitments. The home side held firm in the first period and went in at 0-0 at half time. Pounder replaced himself at the start of the second half and Herrington proceeded to lose their shape as a much stronger Westwood side showed their potential. The pressure applied by Westwood paid off with goals from Peter Hollis and two by Jason Fox.
Birtley Town Reserves entertained Springwell SC and went down 2-1. Birtley dominated the first period and were full value for a 1-0 interval lead courtesy of lan Rowland. Conditions were good considering the very poor weather during the week and Springwell came out in the second period and turned the match around. Goals from Paul Hardy and a late penalty from Warren Brown secured the points for the visitors.
The first round of the Mark Blake Memorial Trophy got under way and three ties were completed. Sunderland Flying Boat progressed into round two with a 6-1 home win over Chesters. Boat were comfortably ahead 2-0 at the interval with goals from Keith Peverley and a 25 yarder by lan Usher. Chris Middleton made it 3-1 early in the second half and lan Usher hit another long range effort. Further goals from Chris Clark and one by Michael Bell, returning from long-term injury, made it a comfortable passage into round two.
Whitehill joined Flying Boat in round two with an 8-3 trouncing of Ebchester. Scorers for the Hill were Peter Norton(4), Gary Johnson(2), Paul Rutherford and Simon Thubron. Ebchester replied with strikes from Michael Hindmarch, Chris Parkin and Philip Mullon.
In a tight match, Boys Welfare defeated Belford House with the only goal of the game from new signing Dave Smith. The tie was close all the way and eventually went into extra time. The golden goal which decided the tie was scored five minutes into extra tune of a very entertaining match.

Half of the fixtures were again wiped out by the rain, but Stockton and Frankland were the prime beneficiaries, both playing under-strength sides and taking the points.
Stockton beat previously unbeaten Cleveland Fire 3-0, who only fielded ten men. Liam Denny scored two of the goals with veteran Eric Young coming on as a substitute to get the other. Noel Young and Jason Parnell were Man of the Match for their respective teams.
Frankland capitalised on Darlington having a weakened team and beat them 5-0, with Ian Gibson, Scott Coates and Paul Davis getting a goal each and Gavin Wigham scored twice.
In the only Second Division game to be played, Sedgefield's long journey to Langbaurgh was fruitful as they came away with a 5-3 win.
Andy Robinson, Andy Gray and Chris Keightley got Langbaurgh's goals. For Sedgefield, Billy Crampsie and Shaun Goad scored two goals each and Carl Moss got the other.
