Competitors were relieved to see the Tees fishable with all Yorkshire river events cancelled, writes JEFF HERBERT.
Although badly coloured on the lower reaches at Yarm the 4th round of the North-East Winter League went ahead as planned on Sunday and small roach were the key to success.
Darlington Angling Centre claimed individual honours but two blanks prevented a team win as the Newman Scott squad all weighed in. Darlington's John Parkinson led from a peg in the little field downstream of the Levenmouth. Groundbait feeder and maggot down the middle located small roach for 6.5.0.
Teammate Nigel Rance opposite the flats at Silverstreet caught on the pole and maggot for 5.7.0.
Teams on the day: 1 Middlesbrough Newman Scott 90 points; 2 Darlington Angling Centre 78; 3 Cleveland Angling Centre 68; 4 Tying Yarm Flynns & Dick Clegg Metro 66.
League: 1 MNS 358 points; 2 Darlington AC 323; 3 CAC 319; 4 Yarm Flynns 318; 5 Dunelm 249; 6 Dick Clegg Metro 235.
High levels effected the turnout for Thornaby AA's Festival Cup and just 30 rods put in an appearance on the Croft to Hurworth stretch of the Tees. Darlington's Dave Nicholson needed just 3.6.0 from a river three foot up and stained by the nearby river Skerne.
Pulling out peg 73 at Hurworth, bomb and meat down the edge secured a chub adding a small dace on the maggot. All the other prize winners relied on single chub.
Others to frame: Barry Stephenson, Darlington 2.12.0; Cyril Close, Shildon 1.6.0; Ray Ingram, Darlington 1.5.0.
Woodland lakes complex at Carlton Miniott near Thirsk was a popular choice for anglers, well away from the flooded and dangerous rivers and as always sport was superb.
Saturday's event on Kestrel Partridge and Skylark was another special 'Section Showdown' with £100 paid out every 5 pegs.
Dick Clegg Metro's Phil Smith made his debut on the complex and grabbed the honours recording 40.10.0 from a field of 105.
Fishing Partridge 12 Phil tamed the rain and frost effected lake on a small maggot feeder offering single red maggot on the hook to take all carp including specimens up to 6.0.0.
Mark Calvert of Cleveland Angling Centre almost opposite on peg 23 adopted an identical approach netting carp of a smaller size and falling short at the scales on 39.14.0.
Best of the rest: A Waistell Map Elton 38.15.0 and M. Barlow Sensa 38.13.0.
The maggot feeder is ruling supreme at Woodlands as the first frosts push the carp shoals out into the deeper water.
Tri-Cast Elton's John Allerton made no mistake during Sunday's open storming ahead with 63.15.0 after pulling out form peg 22 on Skylark lake. It was a bite a 'chuck' for the venue expert as feeder and single maggot accounted for small carp along with a sprinkling of tench.
The adjoining peg gave Paul Clark of Team Normark 2nd place returning a carp feeder net of 38.4.0.
Woodlands midweek result: Dominated by Map Elton rods - 1 J McGarrell 54.5.0 Skylark Peg 22 - all carp; 2 L Roberts 40.8.0; A Waistell 34.0.0. N Johnson 30.12.0.
