PRIMARY schoolchildren are sounding out colour in a cross-art project to create a musical sculpture.
Working with musician Cathryn Dew and visual artist Kerrie Marshall, youngsters from Newport Primary School, Middlesbrough, have created a structure which explores the colours of four different world environments.
Meanwhile, another group of children have composed and recorded four pieces of music - each one inspired by an environment displayed on the sculpture.
Ms Dew said: "When it is finished the recording will be played from inside the sculpture, creating the effect of the sculpture making the music."
The project has been made possible by funding from the New Deal for Communities Education Zone and through a partnership, between the school and Middlesbrough Borough Council's arts development team.
Headteacher Chris Quinn said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with arts development on this project. Participation in the arts helps us all to express ourselves and develop as people. We believe it is important to make time for children to be creative."
