A NEW firing range at the Army's depot at Bellerby is likely to go ahead, as long as the Ministry of Defence can come up with a building which blends into the scenery.
Richmondshire's planners have given conditional consent for a 600-metre rifle range at Moor End, south of Stainton, despite the proximity of a prehistoric site which could be designated a feature of national importance.
A council report said there was little concern that the project would disturb wildlife or the landscape.
However, buildings on the site - which will also incorporate a warden's office store and workshop - will only be given the go-ahead if materials used for roofing are suitable for use in an environmentally sensitive area.
