Durham County Youth

A hat-trick by West Auckland's Kevin Shoulder helped Durham County U-18s to a 4-2 victory over the West Riding in the second round of the FA County Youth Cup.

Durham are now at home to Devon in round three on December 2.

Playing at Ferens Park, Durham took the lead after only five minutes when Herrington's Gavin Cogdon went through to score into the corner. The visitors levelled after 12 minutes when Tim Smith curled the ball in following a short corner.

Smith's fiercely driven free-kick was well held by Durham keeper Mark Bell (West Auckland) and Durham had an effort disallowed for offside when Paul Freary of Crook Town netted from Shoulder's centre. Freary then set up Shoulder to restore Durham's lead in the 37th minute.

Dunston's Craig Robson provided the pass for Shoulder to make it 3-1 in the 63rd minute. Smith got his second and Shoulder went through to draw the keeper and score his third and make the game safe with five minutes to go.

Durham squad: Mark Bell (West Auckland), David Coulson (South Moor), Graham Irvine (Hilda Park), Bob Cooper (Herrington CW), John Guy (Crook Town), Craig Robson (Dunston Fed), Paul Clegg (Gateshead Redheugh), Gavin Cogdon (Herrington), Paul Freary (Crook Town), Kevin Shoulder (West Auckland), Craig Nesbitt (Redheugh). Subs: David Blakelock (Ryhope CW), Jason Singh (Redheugh), Simon Jones (Eyhope), Jason Whale (Crook), Michael Devine (Crook).

Crook Town Horizon Glass

A late revival by Crook Town Horizon Glass failed to earn them a point at Hendon Vic in the Russell Foster League, going down 4-3.

Crook went into the lead after three minutes when good play between Chris Lowes and Wayne Clark created the opportunity for new signing, Robbie Clarey to score.

Two minutes later the home side were denied an equaliser. Thomas Oxberry's shot from ten yards bounced back to him off Crook keeper, Stuart Walker. He shot again only to see Darryl Reed clear off the line.

Hendon grabbed the equaliser after 20 minutes when Ray Dobson outpaced the visitors defence. Five minutes later Ben Royal put the home side ahead following a defensive mix-up. Just before the break Royal's corner went to Ray Dobson who scored from close in.

Six minutes into the second half Hendon extended their lead when Keith Reay latched on to Ben Johnson's long through ball and evaded defenders to score. Things could have been worse for Crook when they conceded a penalty but the effort went wide.

In the late stages Crook got on top and created numerous chances before David Pierson reduced the arrears. The visitors maintained their pressure but had to wait until the last minute before hitting their third goal when Rob Clarey crossed and Wayne Clark converted but there was not enough time to snatch an equaliser.

The Hendon man of the match award went to goalkeeper, Chris Ede, with his opposite number, Stuart Walker taking the award for Crook.

Darlington 21st Allstars

The first weekend of November resulted in a third drastically reduced programme of their nine-week season, with the weather showing early signs of causing massive fixture congestion. Only two teams managed a game and both had to travel.

In the first round of the Durham County Cup, at eleven-a-side level, the U-17s home tie with Houghton Kepiers U-18 team was turned into an away match and, totally undaunted by the change, Allstars came away with a 2-1 victory. A narrow but deserved win was brought about by another display of determined and skilful football. Dean Lowson and Jonathan Raine each poached a goal and Man of the Match Danny Connolly was one of a number of players to turn in match-winning performances.

At seven-a-side level, in the Teesside Junior Alliance's League Cup, the U-10s also turned a home tie into an away match at Hartburn Juniors B and still came through with a 1-0 victory which took them into the quarter-finals.

Allstars missed a number of early chances by trying to walk the ball into the net and goalkeeper Stephen Allenby saved the side on at least a couple of occasions. However, right at the close of a close encounter, Liam Coates broke strongly down the left and crossed into the middle for Daniel Groves to slide the ball into the net under the goalkeeper. Right back Luke Scarr was named Man of the Match for a tremendous display of tackling and ball distribution. In a subsequent friendly, the U-10s won 2-0 with goals from man of the match Liam Clarke and Ross Burton.

Darlington Spraire Lads

Again the weather decimated the fixture list. In the 11-a-side game at U-14 level played in the Teesside Alliance Cup against Norton Grange, Spraire came out on top with a 3-2 win in a close-fought game. In an excellent all round performance the goals came from Kellan (2) and Bernstone. The U-12 A team were also in Teesside League Cup action playing Cleveland All Stars winning 4-1 with a good performance especially in the second half. The goals came from Christopher Grainger with a hat-trick for man of the match Craig Lavelle. In the Richmondshire league cup the U-12 B team lost 4-2 against Thirsk Falcons, goals coming from Lee Borrowdale and an own goal. Man of the match was Lewis Raper. The only other 11-a-side game to survive the weather featured the U-13 C team who played Hartlepool Crest and lost 6-0 and the the Cooper and Leatherbarrow man of the match was Edward Pearson.

At mini level, the U-9s played a thrilling game against Stockton West End eventually winning 5-4 after extra time in a game where all played well. Man of the match was Christopher Lipton, and the scorers were Craig Swainston (3), Owen Raper and Nicholas Petch. In the friendly that followed Spraire lost 3-0 and the man of the match was jointly awarded to Jonathan Blewit and James Park.

At U-10 level Spraire went out of the Teesside Cup, losing 2-0 to Billingham Town. In the friendly that followed Spraire won 4-3, goals coming from Luke Smalley Craig Martin and Kevin Coglan.

City of Durham Youth

The U-12s gained a very impressive 3-1 away win over Plains Farm in the Russell Foster Youth League, Premier Division. An excellent first half performance ended with a goal for Durham's Stephen MacKenzie with keeper Kris Carr making some good saves. Two early second half goals from Alex Wilson and Sebastian Coady secured all three points for Durham. Some battling displays in midfield and a good defensive performance by Durham limited Plains Farm to a consolation goal. To add to Durham's joy, defender Alex Wilson scored his first goal for City. Man of the match was Mark Henson.

Byers Green

The U-8s gained three points at the weekend, losing their first game 3-0 to Barnes Park, then going on to win the second 2-1 against Seham Red Star with goals from Dean Thexton and Jack Marshall.

Northallerton Juniors

A very end to end match saw Northallerton U-13s go 2-0 down at half time before they came back to lead 3-2 only to be pegged back again.

Three well worked goals finally secured the hard earned points , which leaves Northallerton top of their league clear of their nearest rivals.
