BOWLS: DURHAM won five of six rinks against hosts Norfolk to clinch the English Carpet Bowls Association Inter-League championship, held at Hemsby, in Norfolk.
But Durham failed in their bid to make it a double and in the round-robin on Saturday and Sunday, in which they took on squads from Norfolk, North Tyneside, Cambridge, South Tyneside, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, Northumberland and Essex, they went close to a second triumph. In a contest which went down to the last matches, Durham were pipped 65-66 by Cambridgeshire.
Tom Gowland, captain, said: "I was very proud of the team. At least we went one better than last year but really thought we would get the double."
Golf: In the Bedale Seniors' Medal competition, the count-back procedure had to be used for all leading positions which resulted in the following placings: 75 - David Bode (5), Geoff Billings (18), David Hoult (17) and Don Wood (19).
Seniors Stableford: No count-back was needed with all places decided as follows: 39 points Maurice Keane (20), 37 Peter Taylor (18), 36 John Archer (11), 34 John Weedon (24).
