CAMPAIGNERS for a regional assembly are to hear about the London experience of devolution.
The North East Constitutional Convention will be addressed by broadcaster Trevor Phillips when its members meet at Gateshead Civic Centre, on Saturday next week.
Convention chairman, the Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Michael Turnbull, said: "These are critical times for the movement towards democratic regional government.
"A General Election is widely expected next year and two of the major parties have made clear and firm commitments that they will include regional government in their manifestos.
"We have to be ready to rise to the challenge of demonstrating popular support within the region for a directly-elected assembly, and this meeting of the convention will be an important milestone on that journey."
A highlight of the convention will be the launch of a women's forum. The event, from 9.15am to 1pm, is open to the public
