TED, a German Shepherd who became a charity champion when he was pensioned off by the police, has died.
His owner, retired farmer Frank Lucas, has buried 12-year-old Ted in the field where he spent most of the last years of his life on the fells above St John's Chapel in Weardale, County Durham.
Frank picked up Ted from Durham Police dog training headquarters at Harperley, near Crook, ten years ago when it was discovered he couldn't go up ladders because he suffered from vertigo.
Eight months ago it was discovered that Ted was suffering from chronic degenerative radiculo myelopathy (CDRM), which attacks the nervous system and weakens the limbs of older dogs.
He had spent his last years getting about in a cart or "dogmobile" which supported his rear legs.
Ted's case was used by the UK National German Shepherd Helpline as vets try to find the cause of CDRM, and a cure for the crippling disease.
"He was also helping to raise funds for the helpline," said Frank.
