RESIDENTS have lost their fight against plans for a housing estate.
Sunderland City Council has given Persimmon Homes North-East planning permission to build 143 homes at High Dubmire, between Fencehouses and Chilton Moor.
People in the area objected to the development, and were backed by the Durham Wildlife Trust and the Great North Forest.
They were opposed to the loss of open space and worried that schools might not be able to cope with so many families moving in.
Councillor Joe Lawson said: "It will undoubtedly enhance the area, and the building of the central route will move a large amount of traffic away from the main road through Fencehouses.''
The company originally proposed building 203 homes, but scaled down the development because officials said the figure was too high.
The firm will create a children's playground and landscape the Moors Burn area as part of the scheme.
