FIREFIGHTERS have reacted angrily after learning they are to be stripped of badges of rank.
Officers have been told that the uniform epaulettes are to be banned because they are too "militaristic".
The Northumbria Fire Service is the first in the country to scrap rank badges as part of a push to modernise the brigade.
But the move has angered officers. One said: "I respect my uniform and I'm proud to be seen wearing it.
"It has taken me years of hard work and dedication to the brigade to earn my rank. Now I am being ordered to dress like an office worker."
In the new-look brigade, only officers at fire scenes and other emergencies will be allowed to display rank markings on their helmets.
In a written briefing to all firefighters, brigade chief John McCall said: "Why do we need epaulettes to distinguish our role in the office environment? Equally, I'd like to break down the militaristic attitude that has been steeped in our tradition and culture."
Fire Brigade Union secretary sub officer John Lyle said: "There are lot of people who are not happy about the proposals. I think the majority of people want to keep the rank markings.
"They are proud of them and feel they have earned them.
