A COUNCILLOR has thrown his hat into the ring for the contest to succeed outgoing MP Mo Mowlam.
Ian Haszeldine, a member of Darlington Borough Council, is one of the people vying for the safe Labour seat of Redcar.
It follows Dr Mowlam's announcement that she will be standing down from Government and Parliament before the next General Election.
Councillor Haszeldine, 46, is the chairman of Darlington council's resources scrutiny committee.
He said: "The people of Redcar have got a difficult decision to make, because Mo Mowlam is a hard act to follow, and I have enormous respect for her and her achievements, both locally and nationally.
"I know Redcar and the issues the successful candidate will face and am confident that I could represent the people of the area."
