HUNDREDS of east Durham pupils will be tuning up this morning for a music session with a difference.

Wellfield School, in Wingate, will be throwing open its doors for the first time to children from its feeder nursery, infant and junior schools, to take part in a joint musical jam session.

Specialist music staff and older pupils from Wellfield, which has its own fully equipped suite of music rooms, will be on hand to encourage the young music makers.

The results of their efforts will be brought together for a public performance at 6pm.

Proceeds from the tickets, costing £1 and 50p, will go to Barnado's children's charity.

"There will be well over 150 children from places such as Blackhall, Deaf Hill, Hesleden, Thornley, Station Town, Shotton, Wheatley Hill, Wingate and Hutton Henry taking part in the music day," said music teacher Jocelyn McMullen.

"The youngsters will be able to use our expertise and excellent facilities to create their own masterpieces but, more importantly, they will be able to have lots of fun.

"This is the first time we have done this. Hopefully, it will not only encourage even greater links with our feeder schools, but give children a taste of their future school life,'' she said.
