CANCELLED fuel protests by fishermen across the region could be renewed if the industry does not receive Government help.
Fishermen suspended their action, pending a meeting with Agriculture Minister Nick Brown later this week.
The fishermen had been set to protest at ports today, including Whitby and Hartlepool, against the price of marine diesel and the lack of Government aid they receive.
The protests were called off when Mr Brown agreed to meet representatives from the industry. Protestors were also worried about increasing the inconvenience to people after the floods and rail problems.
But they have warned they will make more protests if they do not get any new funding from the Government, to help them compete against subsidised European fishermen.
Sam Lambourn, chairman of the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations, said: "Whilst the view within our federation is that the Government should be give a chance to prove a commitment to the fishing industry, if nothing is done quickly, the calls for protest and direct action will undoubtedly be renewed."
