SECURITY has been reviewed at the Durham Students' Union building following an attack on a student.

The fourth-year male was set upon in toilets in Dunelm House, New Elvet, Durham, by a gang believed to be from outside the university community.

The student, who suffered no serious injuries, had been partying at the Planet of Sound within the building.

Entry to Dunelm House and Planet of Sound is restricted to students who have to show their students' union cards. It is not known how the attackers gained entry.

An internal review of security has shown the current measures in place to be satisfactory.

Jez Light, entertainments and venues manager, said: "Our security here has been operating for three years now, and in all that time we have never had an incident as serious as that.

"When something like that happens we have to make sure the right procedures are being implemented properly. I did a pretty thorough check and there was nothing to call security into question.

"I am sure this incident is not something that's going to be repeated in the future."

PC Dave Hemmingway, university liaison officer, said police had not received a complaint about the recent attack.

He backed security at Dunelm House, adding that police have very few problems with the venue.

He said: "Students should be able to go to the toilets in their own building without somebody giving them a hard time.

"What problems they do have at Dunelm House are sorted out quite professionally by their own door staff.

"We have very few problems there, and I don't think the staff have many problems either."

Meanwhile, police are to investigate reports that university students living in the Whinney Hill area of Durham are being targeted by a gang of four or five local youths, aged about 14.

Students have complained of intimidation and their homes being stoned or pelted with eggs by the gang.

PC Hemmingway said: "We will look at it, and if there are problems being caused, whether to students or anybody living in the area, we will deal with it."
