POLICE have commissioned a high-tech command vehicle to enable them to handle major incidents more efficiently.
The Major Incident Command Vehicle has been developed by Cleveland Police at a cost of £35,000.
Designed to act as a nerve centre for the combined efforts of the emergency services at the scenes of incidents, it will take over the role from the central command room at police headquarters, in Ladgate Lane, Middlesbrough.
The vehicle, an Iveco truck is fitted out with the latest information and communication technology, including secure telephone and radio links and television screens. It will operate in conjunction with mobile firearms and negotiation vehicles.
Superintendent Ian Richards, head of the emergency planning unit, said it would have widespread benefits.
"The main aim is to allow the police officer in overall charge of an incident to be near the scene so that he is able to give quicker and more accurate information on what is happening and liaise with other emergency services."
