A COUNTY Durham athlete will be hoping to achieve even greater heights with a year's free gym sponsorship from his local council.
Wear Valley District Council's leisure and marketing department has offered Ian Holliday, the North-East indoor and outdoor high jump champion, the use of the gym at the Woodhouse Close Leisure Complex, Bishop Auckland.
Ian, 26, a process operator for Glaxo, who lives in Bishop Auckland, said the move would enhance his fitness and help towards his dream of competing in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002.
"I'll be using the facilities two to three times a week through the winter, so it's a great help," he said.
"My main aim for next year is to break into the Great Britain squad. I've had three England vests at Kings Lynn and two at Loughborough at international competitions."
Ian, who competes for Sale Harriers, took fifth place in the high jump two years ago at the UK AAA Championships and he will be looking to beat his personal best of 2m 16cm next season.
He is also seeking sponsorship for help with sports equipment and travel to competitions.
Anyone who can help can contact Ian on (01388) 665167.
